What part of "site not currently accepting uploads" is unclear?

re: submit file sizes... no the maximum files transmission via web post mechanism will not be increased as that is a non-recommended usage of http protocols.

re: Uniuploader.. if you look at server response tab you will be seeing the following at this current time.

"Uploads are currently disabled while we prepare for Warlords of Draenor pre-patch 6.0.2"

Yea it is old message.. but it is still valid for blocking upload attempts until Metalbeast gets his updates finished and tested.

When will that happen?
When he gets it done... and not a moment sooner.

To get around the file size limit, you MIGHT be able to zip the file before uploading it, to allow you to upload bigger files, but not 100% sure.

I'd test it right now to confirm, but can't since uploads aren't allowed right now.

While it's sometimes frustrating to get through the census process, hang in there, we all appreciate anyone trying to contribute to the site :3

Compressing the upload file is why we use the Uniuploader program.
The normal submit via web post aka /upload.php assumes a normal text based lua datafile.
Any other naming or deviation from the normal format is considered an attack attempt against the system and is quarantined and rejected/ignored.

But doesn't Uniuploader and the website, POST to the exact same url (upload.php)?

Wondering....
Wouldn't it be possible to enable uploads, but disable the processing instead?

That way, we can still upload as normal, but the process won't resume until BOYD/MetalBeast choose to..
We would also avoid being "forced" to stockpile our files, for later processing..

There is nothing about me for this site anymore.
It is all in Metalbeasts' hands.

Having said that, I don't remember exactly, but he would have to kill and modify the background scheduling tasks that run all the updates for the site data, to allow uploads to NOT process every 10 minutes.

That might open more cans of worms then we would want to see.

Is there an ETA on when uploads will be enabled?

It's getting pretty frustrating now, yet another lengthy outage can't do the site many favours; it's already been made mostly obsolete by armory scrapers, and every outage probably reduces the small number of contributors we still have, without which we lack enough data to be of any value. If this site's to have much future it really needs to be up and running within 2-3 weeks of a change, not dead silence 6 weeks later Sad

They say all good things come to an end.
I am still hopeful that the site will be updated.
If it's not, I've had some good times here, so I've got no complaints.

The question is .. ARE there any alternatives?

I use this site regularly to both relay ACTUAL activity stats to people (you know .. the ones who like to complain their server is "dead" compared to all the others) and also as part of my applicant vetting process. It's remarkable how many people, when asked to mention previous guilds they've been in, and why they left, tell you they've not been in a guild for years. Then I come here and discover they've been guild hopping for years ..

I know of no other site where I can do these things .. but if anyone does, please do let me know Wink

Another question .. is this just about someone having a lack of time to administer to the site ... and if so, would someone else be able to take that role on? (and if so, what would be involved?)

That's a very good point; the guild history is great and pretty unique! I guess I'm just used to seeing people elsewhere criticising this site for not being accurate (because it's dependent on user submissions and those are not so high as they once were) and saying the armory scrapers are far better. There's definitely a place for the data this site has, but it really needs to not fall any further or it'll be of even less use.

Right now I'd say EU-Draenor Horde side is nicely covered, as me and Fuxie both play there and are very active here, but how many other servers have consistently high submissions from regular players? Judging by the amount of 0 entries on the server submissions page (even when the site hasn't been closed for 6 weeks...), we're in need of a good increase in users to be particularly reliable. This downtime will likely do the opposite Sad

(Note to anyone put off by the above - don't take that as a sign to give up, as any increase in activity will help! We're probably not that far from being more accurate again, some rejuvenation with more admin activity and some word of mouth advertising could well get things going again Smile )

As to what needs to be done, BOYD would have to answer that one for accuracy but I think at the minimum it needs a knowledge of database programming and server admin, stuff like blocking holes that spammers use, as well as the obvious like adding new races to the database. And quite possibly access to suitably powerful servers if Metalbeast, the current server admin and host, gives up entirely (I believe we're currently hosted on his own servers, this database is pretty big).

Going by how many people are active here nowadays, I'm not so hopeful of there being anyone around who happens to have that knowledge and the time to actively maintain things - Metalbeast has the ability but evidently not the time, while I have the enthusiasm and time but none of the knowledge lol, the best I can do is forum moderator and addon testing Laughing

These armoury scrapers are terrible as they often count characters that haven't been played in a while.

It's amazing to see how many people refer to realmpop and claim a server has 200K people on it.

Census is really good at giving you (almost) real-time data. I'm forever posting "Current Moon Guard online population" stats when I'm online.

Oh well. As Fett said, "All good things..."

Yeah I'm regularly on EU-Lightbringer/Mazrigos .. primarily horde side. I do have a list of the less well covered realms that, when I have time, I'll go through to do a quick census on both sides - which isn't the same as a thorough, regular check, but it helps cover some of the "guild history" stuff at the very least. And whenever I speak to people on forums, etc, when they talk about realm population, I ALWAYS talk about this site and link back to it.

Even the census addon itself has been useful in-game when people start having a random whinge about how "dead" it is .. and then I can turn round and tell them "actually, there's currently x number people online horde side .. probably double alliance .. which is good compared to 2 years ago .. " etc.

This site is a lot more accurate than any others, even when it's in it's current state, because it is "real" figures and not some guestimate made up by a computer programme and a scraper.

Perhaps what we need is for someone with the enthusiasm and time and a bit of the basic knowledge, to be willing to take over some of the grunt-work .. surely there's some of the hard work that Metalbeast does that he could let someone else help out with, with very little training? It there nowhere suitable where a plea could be made for some help?

Unfortunately although I have *some* spare time, I'm a complete noob at any of the technical side of things, so I'd be useless :p (I can follow simple instructions of "click this, press that, this is the "undo button", but that's about it!)

I’ve been lurking around these forums for quite a while now but haven’t posted anything before. Just wanted to chip in and say that the information this site provides is fantastic. The guild history section is especially very fascinating. It seems such as shame with the lack of updates because it’s provides information that none of the other population sites can offer.

The reason I’m posting this is because I do have some experience with websites (php, sql) etc. I’m absolutely no expert but I’m willing to offer any help if needed and I’ll give it a shot. I certainly have the time. I appreciate what I’m offering is a long shot and there are probably other people out there who could help with more experience, but I thought I would just put it out there as an option.

Anyway, hopefully something can be worked out to get this site back up and running again. If not, I just wanted to say thank you to Rollie/Metalbeast and everyone who has uploaded data. It’s been a good ride albeit a lot shorter for me then you guys.
